Although this book is not "richly illustrated" as the back cover promises (there are 4 color plates only and 15 B/W), all else about this publication can only be praised.
In 26 essays, the two editors plus 24 other prominent Indologists offer their most detailed insights into two major aspects of Indian religion: its wide spectrum of female deities and the unique gender dynamics expressed in the myths of a society that is, in reality, not less patriarchal than most others.
As the sub-title somehow announces, the goddess Radha is prominently featured (in at least 9 essays), but there are ample more contributions introducing and describing other, often more important goddesses. There are essays here on Ganga, Kali, Shakti, Sita, Sitala and Sri; and there's also a most interesting analysis of the "Types of Sexual Union and their Implicit Meaning" by Frederique Apffel-Marglin.
Other prominent authors featured in this anthology are Edward C. Dimock, Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty and David Kinsley.
